Make a Statement with a Personalised T-Shirt

The t-shirt is a universal garment. Across all geographical and cultural boundaries, t-shirts have been worn to express a huge variety of feelings, opinions, styles and messages.

Evolving from 19th century undergarments and first used by miners, t-shirts first became popular in the USA where they were originally issued by the U.S. Navy. Quickly gaining favour amongst agricultural communities thanks to their cooling and inexpensive qualities, t-shirts became a standard item of clothing for many people. The 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire, in which Marlon Brando famously wore a t-shirt, cemented the garment's pride of place in the wardrobe.

The early 1950s saw several Miami-based companies begin decorating t-shirts with resort names and several characters, notably Mickey Mouse. As the decade passed into the 1960s, a variety of new designs began to appear along with new techniques such as tie-dying; the t-shirt was suddenly elevated to the status of wearable art. Political messages also began to appear on t-shirts, perhaps the most famous image of the time being the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) logo. Commercial interests did not fail to notice the potential of t-shirts for carrying messages and brands such as Coca-Cola quickly printed t-shirts with their logo and marketed them as a fashionable item. Fashion designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren have also created a range of luxury t-shirts. Some symbols and images have become iconic t-shirt logos. These include the smiley face, the album cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, an image of Che Guevara and the famous I ♥ NY logo celebrating the city of New York.
