Overview

Unframed, Framed & Mounted Fine Art Prints

Inkthreadable's fine art prints are printed with pigment inks using a 12-colour giclee print method, for archival prints that hold fine detail and stay vibrant.

Sell unique and customisable posters effortlessly! Choose between unframed, framed, and mounted prints using bamboo, lustre and matte paper in A1 to A5. Frames are solid wood and available in eleven colours, with sizes A2, A3 & A4 available with an acid-free window mount (known as a mat, or mat board, in the US). Mockups for each are available, see the guidelines tab for instructions.

Every print is made to order in the UK, with no minimum order quantity.

Mounts

Add an aperture with mountboard/matting

Cross-section of an A2 mounted frame seen from the front. An A2 frame with a 21 mm moulding, an A2 mount, an A3 print sitting behind the mount, and a window aperture of 287 by 406 millimetres.

A2 mounted frame, drawn to scale. The dashed rectangle is the A3 print; the mount overlaps its edge so the sheet is held in place.

A mount is the board that sits between the print and the frame, with a window cut in it. In the US it's called a mat, or mat board, and a print sold this way is a matted print. Adding one lifts the artwork off the glazing and gives it a clean border.

Framed size Visible image Inches
A2 mounted holds an A3 print 287 × 406 mm 11.3 × 16.0 in
A3 mounted holds an A4 print 200 × 283 mm 7.9 × 11.1 in
A4 mounted holds an A5 print 138 × 195 mm 5.4 × 7.7 in

The window is cut to the same 1:√2 ratio as the A-series paper, so full-bleed artwork fills it without being cropped. A5 frames don't take a mount.

Mountboard

Inkthreadable's mounts are cut from White Core mountboard in Iced White, our house colour.

  • 1.4 mm (1400 micron) mountboard.
  • White core, so the cut edge of the window stays white.
  • Acid-free and pH-neutral - pH 7.5 to 9.5 through the top paper, core and backing.
  • Conservation-grade.
  • Aperture centred and symmetric, so one mount works in portrait or landscape.

  • 21 × 22 mm
Solid obeche (ayous) moulding - 21 mm face width, 22 mm frame depth.
  • Flat profile
    Mitred corners.
  • 2 mm acrylic
Acrylic glazing (Perspex) - shatter-resistant, glass-free and light, so it ships safely and keeps your shipping costs down.
  • MDF
    Backing board.
  • Fixed hanger
Hanging fixture attached directly to the backing board so your print arrives ready to hang either in portrait or landscape.
  • Strut back
On A4 and A5, so they can stand freestanding as well as hang.
  • Origin
Manufactured in the UK from EU-traceable solid wood.
Cross-section through the frame moulding. A flat 21 by 22 millimetre moulding with a rebate holding, front to back, 2 millimetre acrylic glazing, a 1.4 millimetre mount, the print, and an MDF backing board.

The moulding rebate covers a few millimetres of the mount edge, so the visible border in the finished frame is slightly narrower than the mount itself.

Sizing

Product mockups

Exporting to a linked store sends one mockup image, and it is used for every variant you export. That image is the A2 mounted frame, so a listing for any other size or finish will show the wrong product unless you replace it.

To show the right image against each variant, download the mockups you need from the design tool and upload them to your store variants yourself. The guidelines tab covers this in full.

Weights

Product weights

Product weights determine shipping costs. Use these weights in any integrated store to work out shipping for your customer, so you're covering your own costs with Inkthreadable.

Print Weight
All framed prints 500 g
All unframed A5 prints 100 g
Unframed A4 bamboo prints 100 g
Unframed A3 bamboo prints 200 g
All other unframed prints 200 g

Framed prints use acrylic rather than glass, so they weigh less and survive transit better than a glazed frame. You can find our shipping cost matrix here.

FAQs

Common questions

What size print fits an A2 mount?

An A2 mounted frame shows 287 × 406 mm of your artwork, or 11.3 × 16.0 inches. An A3 mounted frame shows 200 × 283 mm and an A4 shows 138 × 195 mm. The visible image is always smaller than the frame size, so the aperture is the figure to list in your store.

Which sizes can have a mount?

Mounts are available on A2, A3 and A4 frames. A1 is unframed only, and A5 frames don't take a mount. The size table above shows which papers offer a mount at each size.

What size should my design file be?

A1 for the unframed upload, 594 × 841 mm at 300 ppi, which is 7016 × 9933 pixels. The framed upload only needs A2 and the mounted upload only needs A3, because those are the largest sizes each one prints. The A1 file works in every slot if you'd rather not export three versions to upload.

How much of my artwork is covered?

A frame covers about 6 mm of each edge. A mount covers more, and how much depends on the size. Artwork with important detail at least 4% in from every edge stays safe on any variant, which is 25 mm at the sides and 34 mm top and bottom on an A1 document.

Which paper should I choose?

Bamboo is the heaviest at 290 gsm, with warm tones and a lightly textured surface, and it's the sustainable option. Lustre at 275 gsm has a soft sheen and the widest colour gamut, which suits photography and bold artwork. Matte at 240 gsm is smooth and neutral, and it photographs well for product listings.

What file format should I supply?

JPG and PNG are both accepted. Either is fine at 300 ppi, so the format matters less than the pixel dimensions.

What colour profile should I use?

sRGB. We convert to CMYK as part of the print process. Very saturated colours can shift a little in that conversion, so a printed sample is the reliable way to check a critical colour.

How long does production take?

3 to 5 working days. Unframed prints are usually ready in 3, and adding a frame or a mount takes it closer to 5. Shipping time is on top of that.

Can I order a sample?

Yes. Sample discount codes go out monthly to newsletter subscribers. You can sign up to the newsletter here.

Why doesn't the preview change when I select a different size or framing option?

The preview follows the view selected inside the design tool, not the variant options on the product page. Choose your size and finish in the variant options first, then select the matching view from the drop-down at the top left of the design tool. Frame colour is the exception and updates on its own.

I've uploaded my design and want to change the size. What should I do?

Delete the uploaded file first, then change size using the drop-down at the top left of the design tool, then upload again. Each size and finish is a separate print area with its own file, so if you upload to more than one, all of them are added to your order and each is charged as a print.

Can I upload a different design to each size?

Yes. The design tool can hold several prints on one product, which is useful elsewhere in our range. For a single poster it's rarely what you want, so upload one file to one print area.

Which image gets sent to my store when I export?

One image, used for every variant, and it will be the A2 mounted frame. To show the right image against each variant, download the mockups you need from the design tool and upload them to your store variants yourself.

Print sizes

A-series, in mm and inches

Size Millimetres Inches
A1 594 × 841 mm 23.4 × 33.1 in
A2 420 × 594 mm 16.5 × 23.4 in
A3 297 × 420 mm 11.7 × 16.5 in
A4 210 × 297 mm 8.3 × 11.7 in
A5 148 × 210 mm 5.8 × 8.3 in

Every size is available in portrait or landscape. A-series sizes are not the same as US frame sizes such as 16 × 20 or 18 × 24, so list the dimensions above rather than a US equivalent.

Framed

What the frame measures on the wall

The moulding has a 21 mm face, and 6 mm of that sits over the print, so a frame adds 15 mm along each edge. Frames are available in A2 to A5.

Framed size Frame measures Inches
A2 450 × 624 mm 17.7 × 24.6 in
A3 327 × 450 mm 12.9 × 17.7 in
A4 240 × 327 mm 9.4 × 12.9 in
A5 178 × 240 mm 7.0 × 9.4 in

On a framed print without a mount, the moulding covers about 6 mm of each edge of the sheet. Keep anything you don't want hidden inside that margin.

Mounted

The effect mounting has on your framed print

Cross-section of an A2 mounted frame seen from the front, showing an A3 print behind an A2 mount with a 287 by 406 millimetre window.

An A2 mounted frame. The dashed rectangle is the A3 print; the mount overlaps its edge to hold it in place.

Mounts are named by the frame they come in, not by the print inside. An A2 mounted frame takes an A3 print, and the window is cut slightly smaller than the sheet so the mount can hold it.

Framed size Print inside Visible image Inches
A2 mounted A3 287 × 406 mm 11.3 × 16.0 in
A3 mounted A4 200 × 283 mm 7.9 × 11.1 in
A4 mounted A5 138 × 195 mm 5.4 × 7.7 in
Designing for a mount

The mount covers about 5 mm along each side and 7 mm top and bottom. Supply artwork at the full print size and keep anything you don't want cropped inside that margin. The window is cut to the same 1:√2 ratio as the paper, so full-bleed artwork fills it without distortion.

Mounts are available on A2, A3 and A4 frames. A5 frames don't take a mount, and A1 is unframed only.

Design tool

Using the design tool

The design tool can hold more than one print on a single product, so each size and finish you see is its own print area. That's useful on other products, though on this one it means you should follow the steps below to use the design tool correctly.

How to use Inkthreadable's design tool to create your art print product

The design tool defaults to the A2 framed and mounted print when the page loads. The preview doesn't follow the size and finish you select in the variant options, to change the preview you select the correct option from the drop-down within the tool. Follow these steps:

  1. Choose your variant options on the right hand side (Paper, Frame, Mount, Size).
  2. Choose the corresponding mockup from the drop-down at the top left corner of the design tool.
  3. Upload your design file and either add to basket, download your mockup, or save to your account.

Upload your file only once

Each print area holds its own file and each one is charged as a print, which again is useful on other products but not so much this one.

If you've already uploaded and want to use a different size or framing option, delete the uploaded file first, then change size using the drop-down at the top left of the design tool, then upload again.

If you're exporting to your store

Exporting sends one image to every variant. This product will export the A2 mounted frame for all variants, so you'll need to manually download any alternative variant mockups and upload them to your store variants to accurately represent what you're selling.
